Description
A Beautiful and unusual Victorian rare ?African Stinkwood? (also known as ?Cape Walnut/Laurel?) dressing table or desk with carved claw feet. The body of this dressing table or desk is one that I have never seen before, - it is a kidney-shaped ?drum? style with linenfold detail all the way around it. and pie-crust edging. The style of this dressing table is particularly well-suited and commonly used with this particular wood as it is beautifully patterned and striped with a deep tone to it which is further enhanced by the vertical lines of the linenfold design.

The top, sides and legs have some scratches/marks commensurate with its age but these could easily be dealt with. I think the drawer linings have been replaced at some point.

African Stinkwood was so-named because of the unpleasant smell of the wood when it was cut. The colour and pattern variations in the wood is the reason that this wood is so sought after. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a piece of furniture made from a wood which is now very rare as these trees are an endangered species due to excessive use of it for furniture in the early 20th century and as a result are now protected.
